John Work Passes Here
John Work, well known throughout Monterey county, to which he came as a boy 62 years ago from his home in the Shetland islands, Scotland, passed away this morning at his home in Pacific Grove. He was 80 years old. Mr. Work, who preceded his brothers in coming to California, settled first on the Monterey Peninsula but later moved to San Miguel in the southern part of the county, where he accumulated extensive holdings. He returned to the Peninsula six years ago, however, to reside in Pacific Grove. Death followed an illness of several months. One of Mr. Work’s many philanthropies was the presentation of a resuscitator to the peninsula communities recently. The instrument was placed in the custody of the Monterey fire department for Peninsula-wide use. He leaves his wife, Mattie H. Work, Pacific Grove; three daughters, Agnes Work, Capitola; Ardelia and Alice Work of Pacific Grove; a son, Robert R. Work, San Miguel; two sisters, Mrs. Adolf Garrick of San Diego and Mrs. Harry Atkins of Watsonville, and three brothers, T.A. Work of Monterey, and George and James Work of Watsonville. Mr. Work was a member of the San Miguel Masonic lodge, of Violet chapter No. 102 of the Order of Eastern Star at San Miguel and of the Monterey lodge of Elks. Funeral services from Paul’s mortuary in Pacific Grove will be conducted by the Elks lodge at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at San Miguel with the Masonic lodge officiating.
