Pacific Grove Youth Dies After Auto Crash
Joe Canaya Succumbs to Injuries Received in Accident Near Fort Ord; Three Passengers Are Injured

Joesph R. Canaya, S 1/c, USNR, a graduate of Pacific Grove High School with the class of ’45 and well known on the Peninsula as an outstanding athlete, died at 8:15 this morning in a local hospital of injuries suffered late last night when the sedan he was driving went out of control and overturned on State Highway No. 1, north of Fort Ord Village. Joan Apathy, 14, a passenger in the car, was seriously injured. Thomas Flint Jr., and Joyce Johnson, 14, who were riding in the back seat of the car, were slightly injured. The four, all of Pacific Grove, were taken to the Monterey Hospital by a passing motorist. The highway patrol estimated speed of the car at the time of the crash as about 70 miles per hour. It is believed a blowout caused the car to swerve off the highway and crash. Young Canaya, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Canaya of 315 Third street, had just completed a year of Navy service, and was stationed at Shoemaker, awaiting discharge. Canaya was an outstanding athlete during his high school days, recording a national record for the lightweight pole vault and winning letters in both basketball and football, in which he was also named to All CCAL positions for two years running. His death marks the second Peninsula traffic fatality within a week, and brings Monterey County’s traffic death toll of 48. Robert D. Harrington, 25, also a Navy veteran of Pacific Grove, met his death in a three-way automobile accident which occurred last week at Fremont and El Estero streets. Funeral arrangement for Joseph Canaya, in charge of T.A. Dorney, will be announced later.
