Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Dec. ??, 1950
In the sudden death early Monday morning of Paul Whitman, Carmel suffered the loss of a true friend and great leader. Mr. Whitman died enroute to Monterey hospital after complaining of severe chest pains. A native of Denver, Colorado, he was 53 years old. For many years he was a successfull insurance broker in St. Louis, Missouri, and upon his retirement from business came to the Peninsula to take up art exclusively. His work, which includes oils, water colors and lithographs, has won wide recognition throughout the country. Currently, his animals in the forest at Pebble Beach, a Christmas feature at the Lodge, have attracted scores of visitors. During World War I, he saw service as a lieutenant overseas with the 128th Field Artillery, Battalion A, while during the second World War he was connected for five years in San Francisco doing camaflage work. He was a member of the Carmel Art Association and served at one time as vice-president of that organization. He also served as chief of civilian defense here before taking up his war duties in San Francisco. He had been head of the Peninsula Red Cross Blood Bank program and devoted many hours to this important work. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anita Whitman; two sons, Paul, with the Navy at Hunter's Point, and Colden Whitman of Carmel; a daughter, Mrs. George B. Chapman of Aurora, Ohio; a brother, Colden Whitman of Madera; two sister, Mrs. William Field and Mrs. Stewart McCormick, both of St. Louis, Missouri; three grandchildren, Christopher, George and Geoffrey Chapman of Aurora, a niece and three nephews. Private services were held yesterday morning at the Little Chapel-by-the-Sea Crematorium in Pacific Grove, with the Paul Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
