D.F. Stokes Succumbs in Monterey
Death claimed David Franklin Stokes, descendant of a prominent pioneer family of Monterey, Sunday morning in a local hospital. Mr. Stokes had been in failing health for some time. He had served for the past 25 years in the road maintenance department of the county government, and was foreman of the maintenance crew at the time of his death. Mr. Stokes was born Dec. 15, 1901, in Salinas, son of the late Franklin Stokes and Mrs. Delphinia Stokes of that city. He was a direct descendant of Dr. James Stokes who settled in Monterey in 1834 and took as his bride Maria Josefa Soto, becoming owner of what was later known as the Gragg adobe, 500 Hartnell street. Dr. Stokes was consulting physician to Governor Figuerroa, and later served as alcalde of Monterey. Mr. David Stokesí marriage to Miss Bessie Collins of Kansas took place Feb. 17, 1930, in Salinas, and the couple established a home in Monterey that same year. Mr. Stokes was widely loved for his warm, friendly personality. He was an active member of Monterey Lodge 182, IOOF of Pacific Grove and the Cypress Rebekah Lodge, No. 75. In addition to his wife and his mother, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Ada Baylen of Susanville; three grandchildren, Yvonne, Eleanor Anna, and William F. Baylen of that city; two brothers, Arthur and William Stokes of Salinas; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Stromness, Mrs. Juanita Clemens, and Mrs. Maria Molares, all of Salinas, and Mrs. Erebella Coates of Marysville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Paul Mortuary, with Rev. T. J. Barkle officiating, assisted by members of the Monterey IOOF Lodge. Private inurnment will take place in the Little Chapel-by-the-Sea Crematorium, Pacific Grove.
