Baby Born In Automobile
Al Mathews, Seaside attorney, said this afternoon that he is investigating reports that Mrs. Dewey Hill, 32, wife of a Monterey fisherman, was denied admission Saturday morning to the Monterey hospital and subsequently gave birth to a child in the automobile in which she has started to a Salinas hospital for treatment. Mathews, who said he has known Mrs. Hill and her family for many years, indicated hat a civil suit against the hospital may be filed by him in behalf of his clients. Mrs. Hill was reported by members of her family to be in “very serious” condition at the Bayview hospital, Pacific Grove, this afternoon. The woman and her infant daughter, the seventh child born to the family, were admitted to the Pacific Grove hospital following the arrival of the child and Dr. Richard E. Eby of Monterey was called in to attend them. Mrs. Angelina Consiglio, 71, New Monterey, mother of Mrs. Hill, was with her daughter in the automobile of Sam Taylor, a neighbor, when the party started for Salinas Saturday morning she told The Herald this afternoon. Mrs. Hill had been under treatment by Dr. F. Hilton Smith, Salinas physician, and expected to go to the Salinas Valley hospital for her confinement. Mrs. Consiglio said, however, that her daughter said she was unable to stand the motor trip to Salinas and unsuccessful efforts were made to obtain admission to the Monterey hospital for treatment. The elderly woman said she had offered to pay for treatment but that nurses refused her daughter admission and told her to “go on to Salinas.” The baby was born, Mrs. Consiglio said, while the automobile was enroute to the Pacific Grove hospital and the mother and child were subsequently taken to her home on Jessie street pending final removal t the Bayview hospital by ambulance. Mrs. Consiglio said that Taylor and Arthur Andrews, another neighbor, would support her version of what happened at the hospital. Authorities at the Monterey Hospital said this afternoon that there was no doctor at the institution when Mrs. Hill arrived and that she was advised by a secretary to go on to Salinas for treatment. They pointed out that she would have been readily admitted had she called a local physician to attend her or if she had made a reservation for care here. Dr. Hugh Dormody, hospital manager, said that no approved hospital is permitted to admit patients unless they are attended by a physician and that his check on the incident convinced him the hospital staff had done nothing improper in suggesting that Mr.s Hill be taken to Salinas for treatment. “Our clerical staff and nurses, naturally, cannot admit patients unless there is a doctor to care for them,” he said. “In this case the attending physician was in Salinas and there was no doctor in the hospital at the time.”

Infant, Born in Auto, Taken Home
Mrs. Dewey Hill, New Monterey mother, and her infant daughter were taken home from the Bayview hospital, Pacific Grove, today and Dr. Richard Aby who attended them said their condition is satisfactory. Birth of the infant, Mrs. Hill’s seventh child, in a neighbor’s automobile Saturday after she had failed to obtain treatment at a local hospital had created wide interest in the case.
