Mrs. Hester Setty Celebrates her 88th Birthday anniversary
Eighty-eight years ago in Adams county, Ohio, a daughter, Hester, was born to Reverend and Mrs. Nathaniel Leatherwood. The 88th anniversary of that day was celebrated on Thursday of this week by Mrs. Hester A. Setty at her home in Seaside. Celebrating with her were her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Furlong of Seaside; her son, Irwin Setty, and his wife, who came from Fresno for the occasion, and her granddaughters, Mrs. Robert Bratt of Seaside and Mrs. William Temple of Salinas. Other members of Mrs. Setty’s family who were unable to be with her for the day, but sent their greetings, were two other sons, George and Roy Setty, of Frenso, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Just before her son, Irwin, arrived from Fresno to wish his mother a happy birthday, Mrs. Setty had been preparing to go to the home of Mrs. E.O. Reese, where a party was being given in her honor. But Irwin’s arrival so excited Mrs. Setty, she completely forgot the party! It went on without her, however, and the group of friends gathered at Mrs. Reese’s home joined in wishing a happy birthday for the absent guest of honor as they cut her pink and white birthday cake. Mrs. Reese’s guests were Mrs. Robert Brassfield, Mrs. J.G. Campbell, Mrs. Brewer, Mrs. Cooke, Mrs. Hazeltine, Ms. Caldwell, Mrs. Etella marshall, Mrs. Hollenstein, Mrs. Eileen Hall, Mrs. W.L. Rose, Mrs. A.O. Soucey, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Nielsen, Mrs. Wallace Waddle, Mrs. Wyss, Mrs. J.H. Clark, Mrs. Fred Syrcie, Mrs. Blanche Smith and Mrs. R.L. Furlong. Mrs. Setty’s father was a chaplain during the Civil War who died at Chicamauga and was a minister of the Drunkard church (Mennonites), now known as the United Brethren. He always wore the garb of his church, refusing to don any other type of clothing. Following her marriage to Sanford Setty, Mrs. Setty migrated with 30 other families to Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, and helped in developing that part of the country. Her husband died in 1928 after carrying mail for the United States post office at Seaside for 7 ˝ years. Before coming to the Monterey Peninsula, the Settys farmed for 11 years near Kearney Park, in Fresno. “Perseverance” is Mrs. Setty’s watchword, and it is one that might well be adopted for common usage during these chaotic times. “Some things are hard – very hard – and sometimes they are very pleasant. We must learn to make the best of it, whatever it is. One must learn perseverance,” Mrs. Setty believes.
