Two Hundred Relatives and Friends Celebrate Golden Wedding of Grove Couple
Rev. and Mrs. Thomas A. Towner celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Thursday evening in the Sunday school room of the Methodist church. Upwards of two hundred relatives and friends were present to offer congratulations and enjoy the social features of the occasion. The room was beautifully decorated, the principal feature being an arch of calla lilies, mustard blossoms and ferns, all most artistically mingled, in the center of the arch hung three gilded wedding bels. A profusion of calla lilies, mustard blossoms, freesias and white iris in jardiniers and baskets, with streamers of yellow crepe paper and smilax were used to carry out the colorful picture in gold, white and green. After the assembled guests were seated Mrs. D.N. Howe took her place at the piano and to the strains of Mendelsohn’s Wedding March, the happy couple who have walked the path of life for fifty years together entered the room preceeded by their little grandson and granddaughter, Edwin Earl Jr., and Doris Towner. They were followed by their sons and daughters, Mrs. Charles Dutcher, of Portland, Oregon; Mr. & Mrs. Earl Towner, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Towner, Mr. & Mrs. Verne Towner, and Gilbert Towner, all of San Jose, Ralph Towner of Brawley, California. Antoher son, William Towner, of Imperial Valley, was unable to be present. It is seldom, indeed that every member of a family is so gifted as to either play a musical instrument or sing in so pleasing a manner as to entertain an audience, but every member of the Towner family took part in the musical program which was presented, and all were enthusiastically applauded. A very pleasing part of the program was the playing of a piano selection of his own compositon by little Edwin Towner. His father also sang two beautiful vocal solos of his own composition. The following in the program in detail. Wedding March, Mendelssohn, Mrs. D.N. Howe. Ceremony and Prayer, Rev. C.E. Irons. Solo, Bells of the Sea, Verne B. Towner. Historic Parable, Mrs. W.C. Robbins. Two songs of his own composition by Earl Towner. Glimpses of Fifty Years, Original Poem, Mrs. T.A. Towner. Piano Solo by Edwin E. Towner Jr. Violin Solo by Gilbert Towner, accompanied by Verne Towner. Duet, Sunset, by Parks, sung by Mrs. Lota E. Dutchr, and Verne Towner. Song and chorus by the five Towner brothers. Two vocal solos by Frank Towner. Miss Eleanor King, then delighted the audience by giving one of her charming whistling solos. Rev. C.E. Irons, pastor of the Methodist Church, was not included in the list of those who were to present the program, but he, nevertheless, took an important part by happily surprising the bride and groom of fifty years ago with a purse containing fifty dollars in gold, a gift from many friends – one dollar for each year of their happy wedded life. A social session and congratulations followed the delightful program, after which ? punch, and delicious cakes were served by the young ladies of the church, thus completing an evening of much enjoyment for the assembled guests. And, one long to be remembered. Mrs. Towner’s poem will be published Monday.
