Prominent Pacific Grove Merchant Takes Own Life
Orlin Fred Grant, 46, lifelong resident of Pacific Grove and a prominent member of the Elks Club here, killed himself by firing a bullet through his head Saturday afternoon in his home. His wife, who had rushed into the house when six shots were fired prior to the fatal one, was in the bedroom with him when he took his life. They lived at 906 Ruth Court, Pacific Grove. Police could give no reason for the act. He was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Christopher Hill, death being caused immediately by a bullet which entered his head just behind the right ear. Police Chief E.R. McAnaney pronounced the case a suicide. Mrs. Grant called Pacific Grove police at 1:21 o’clock Saturday afternoon, just after the shooting. She repeated the following story of the suicide to Sgt. Norman Fitzsimmons, of the Pacific Grove police, and Hill: Mr. and Mrs. Grant returned from their store, the Grant Home Supplies, on Forest Avenue, just after noon. She went into the kitchen to make lunch for both of them and their daughter, Jo Ann, 15. Grant went into his bedroom. When Mrs. Grant called him, he said he didn’t want any lunch and that he had undressed and was going to take a nap. Mrs. Grant and Jo Ann ate, then went out of the house and got into the truck. As Mrs. Grant started the truck, six shots were fired through the bedroom window. Mrs. Grant told police she did not think Grant was firing at them. Mrs. Grant ran back into the house and saw Grant reloading the clip to the .32 automatic pistol which was lying on the bed. She said she grabbed the gun, put it in the bureau drawer and closed the drawer. Mrs. Grant said her husband declared, “That won’t do you any good: I’ve got other guns.” He then tried to get at the bureau to get the gun and they fought. Grant grabbed his wife by the hair and threw her towards the bedroom door. He grabbed the gun again, reloaded it, then fired the bullet into his head. Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning in the Paul Mortuary, with the Monterey Elks Lodge and the Rev. T.J. Barkle officiating. Private inurnment will take place in the Little Chapel by-the-Sea Crematorium. Grant was born in Pacific Grove in 1906 and attended local schools. Besides his wife, Ella, and two daughters, Jo Ann and Gary Grant, all of Pacific Grove, he leaves three sisters and a brother. They are Mrs. Eva Terwilliger, of San Francisco; Mrs. Lois Scoble, of Sacramento; and Mrs. Irene Hirshy, of Parkland, Wash.; and one brother, Herbert Grant, of Pacific Grove.
