Pacific Grove Auto Death Ends Six-Year City Safety Record
Elderly Resident Struck at Crossing

Frank Irving King, 72, died early this morning of injuries received yesterday when struck by a car on Lighthouse Avenue near the Pacific Grove Post Office. His death is the first from a traffic accident in Pacific Grove in the past six years. By a strange coincidence, King was struck at almost the same point on Lighthouse Avenue where the last traffic fatality in the city occurred. His death brought to 52 the number of lives lost this year in Monterey County traffic accidents. According to the police report, Mrs. Pauline L. Blair of 225 Cypress Ave., was driving east on Lighthouse at a moderate rate of speed, when she heard something strike the car. Mrs. Blair evidently did not see King until she stopped the car and found him lying in the road, police said. She was not held. Passengers in the car included Mrs. Blairís two small children, and Mrs. Pauline Forrester, who lives at the same address as the Blairs. The victim was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance, but never regained consciousness. Details of the accident are still under investigation, the police department reported. Pacific Grove had not had a traffic fatality since Jan. 11, 1947, when Bob Aiken, a resident of the city, was struck down as he was crossing Lighthouse Avenue in front of the Post Office. King was born June 29, 1881 in Cleveland, Ohio. He came to Pg in 1904. He made his home at 852 Lighthouse Ave. For 15 years King was employed in the grocery department at Holmanís Department Store. He then worked at the Fort Ord commissary during World War II, and since his semi-retirement several years ago he was worked as custodian of the First Methodist Church. King leaves his wife, Minnie F. King of Pacific Grove; two sons, C. Paul King of Pacific Grove and Robert I. King of Carmel; a sister, Miss Dora C. King of Pacific Grove; a grandson, Steven King of Carmel; and a stepsister, Mrs. A.C. Jochmus of Fresno. Funeral services are pending at The Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove.
