Santa Cruz Sentinel, CA Dec. 23, 1970
Golden Weds
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Irving Lovett celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday at a reception in the fellowship hall of the Congregational Church of Soquel. Hosts were their daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Whitehead of South San Francisco and Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Lathrop of Watsonville; and the grandchildren, John, Stuart, Jeanne, Marie, and Ellen Whitehead and Cheryl, Pamela (Mrs. Rick Snyder), Nina and Richard Lathrop. The Lovetts were married on Christmas Day, 1920, at the Berkeley Chapter House of Selta Zeta Sorority. Both were graduated from the University in 1916. Mr. Lovett completed 30 years of teaching, a principal and superintendent of high schools in Weaverville, Big Pine and at Death Valley. Mrs. Lovett was a teacher of art, music and English. Their mountain and desert experiences provided material for Mrs. Lovett’s prints and paintings of early California and of desert wildflowers. T their retirement in 1953, they came to live in Santa Cruz and since then have been active in community affairs. Mrs. Hugh Buckingham, of Berkeley, matron of honor at the Lovetts’ wedding, attended the reception, as did 10 other wedding guests. Fourmembers of Mrs. Lovett’s 1912 graduation class from Pacific Grove High School had a pleasant reunion. Members of the Lovett clan who attended from Sacramento, San Jose and Piedmont were Mrs. Fred Slingerland, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hanson and Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Lovett. Cousins of Mrs. Lovett who were among guests were Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Turner of Fresno, Mr. & Mrs. Worth Salsman of Suisun and Mr. & Mrs. John Alden Myers of Santa Clara. Mrs. Walter Boring directed the junior choir of the church in a program of songs accompanied by guitars and with Mrs. Patricia Allgrove at the piano. Cheryl Lathrop read Desiderata. Marie and Ellen Whitehead modeled the wedding gowns of their great-grandmother, Mrs. Nina Sheppa, in 1890; and grandmother, Mrs. Lovett. A series of photographs and mementos depicting the Lovetts’ 50 years together were on display for more than 100 guests. Presiding at the tea table was Mrs. Stanley Covell.
