Father Held in Death of Infant
A man accused by his wife of refusing to let her summon a doctor while their child choked to death was arraigned in Monterey Municipal Court today on a charge of manslaughter. Robert Edward Palazzo, 24, of Gorda was brought into court in handcuffs to hear the charge that he “did unlawfully, feloniously and without malice kill one Nadja Palazzo, a human being.” The girl, 13 months old, died Tuesday at the Palazzo home at Gorda, a remote coastal settlement in southern Monterey County. An autopsy showed that she strangled to death on a pinto bean which was lodge in her throat. Inspector Thomas Martin of the Monterey County Sheriff’s office, said Mrs. Palazzo told him her husband prevented her from seeking help when the child started strangling. Martin said the mother reported it was three hours before she was able to contact a neighbor, Marko McClintock, who took the little girl to a Cambria physician. By that time, the child was dea. Palazzo was arrested Wednesday on a non-support complaint which had been filed previously by his wife in Pacific Grove. He was taken to the county jail at Salinas and then to the Pacific Grove city jail, where he was held last night. Meanwhile, Deputy Dist. Atty. William Marsh filed the manslaughter complain yesterday afternoon. Marsh said he lodged the charge on grounds that Palazzo “failed to exercise the duties that would be expected of a normal parent.” At the arraignment this morning, Judge Ray Baugh appointed attorney William Kennedy to represent palazzo. The judge denied bail. Later, Judge Richard Eldred of Pacific Grove Justice Court dismissed the non-support charge at the request of the district attorney’s office. Palazzo was taken to the county jail in Salinas to await a preliminary hearing on the manslaughter charge. The hearing, which will be held in Monterey Municipal Court, was set for 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Gorda Man Faces Sanity Test in Death of Girl
Robert Palazzo of Gorda, accused of manslaughter in the death of his 13-month old daughter on Aug. 2, today was certified to Superior Court for a determination of sanity. He appeared this morning in Monterey Municipal Court. Asst. Dist. Atty. Tom Moore said that if Palazzo is found to be sane, a preliminary hearing will be held in the lower court. The state contends that Palazzo was negligent in providing medical attention for the little girl when she choked on a pinto bean.
