Monterey County Herald, March 28, 1999
Rose Ascanio of Monterey celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 6 at her grandson’s home in Clayton. Mrs. Ascanio, nee Trentinelli, was born Feb. 7, 1899, in Villa de Cordilo, Italy. She has two sons, Joe and Mario Ascanio, both of Monterey; and two daughters, Vera Gambalie of Pittsburg and Mary Spanaugle of Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 18 `great-great-grandchildren. She survives two daughters, Josie Russo and Sarah Ascanio, and her husband, Antonio, who died in 1955. Mrs. Ascanio has lived in Monterey since 1924. She worked in the canneries until they closed, then worked for a freeze company for several years before retiring. When the U.S. entered World War II, she and her husband were visiting in Pittsburg. Since they were not American citizens, their travel was restricted and they were not allowed to return to Monterey for about a year. Upon their return, Mrs. Ascanio went back to the canneries, and was escorted home from work each day by guards. Mrs. Ascanio was a member of the Italian-Catholic Federation and the Cannery Workers Union. The secret to her longevity, she said, is “Living a good, clean life and a strong religious conviction.” Mrs. Ascanio celebrated with friends and family at a luncheon buffet that featured a large ice sculpture depicting “100” years.
