Pacific Grove High Tide, CA Fri., April 16, 1937
Family Gathering Notes Golden Wedding Day
This poem [omitted] written in 877 by the late Mrs. Annie Van Ogle on the golden anniversary of a dear friend of hers is particularly appropriate now that her own daughter, Mrs. Frank H. Vining and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding day. It was to celebrate this happy occasion that their children and families flocked to Pacific Grove Sunday and were responsible for one of the most delightful affairs of the month a family dinner at the Forest Hill Hotel. There were 27 seated at the festive board spread with golden colored crape paper and graced with a low bowl of genesta and marigolds. Gold was also predominate in the place cards, decorated with wedding bells and lettered with gold, as well as in the ruffled nut cups also decorated with the traditional bells. Holding a mighty conspicuous spot was the huge cake, a present of Mrs. Siebensietz of dimensions 17 inches by 17, so that even after everybody had taken big slices of it there was so much left over that there was ample to take home. An impromptu program given by the grandchildren was one of the delightful features of the dinner hour. Bill Vining was the first to entertain with a brilliant classical piece on the piano. Robert Harold Miner followed with another piano selection and little Shirley Vining contributed a piano solo as did Velma Minor. At the close of the meal Bill Vining delighted his listeners with the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. The Vining home was filled with flowers for the occasion, including a yellow lily sent as a gift. Elsewhere in the home were heaps of gifts that continued to arrive during the day as did cards and telegrams. Among the gifts was a picture of St. Luke’s church in Tacoma, Washington, where the young couple took their vows 50 years ago, April 11, when the Rev. Lemuel H. Wells, who is still living, officiated. There were other pictures, too, including some snapshots taken when Mrs. Vining recently made her first trip to the bay region in 19 years and crossed into Oakland via the newly constructed bay bridge. Of much interest was one picture taken on her visit showing a baby cousin of Mrs. Vining with four of her great-grandparents. Those who took part in the festivities with the Vinings were: Mr. & Mrs. Harold Vining and their two children, Marjorie Sue and Irving; Mr. & Mrs. Arch Vining and their son Bill; Dr. and Mrs. O.L. Minor of Palo Alto and their children, Velma, Robert and Elwood; Mr. & Mrs. Percy H. Thompson of San Jose and their children, Betty, Kenneth and Eugene Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Vining and their children, Shirley, Jeannie and Ronald Jr.; and Mr. & Mrs. Ernest R. McAnaney and their daughter Betty Louise.
