Pacific Grove Tribune Fri., Feb. 6, 1945
Student George King is in the Army Now
George King, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jack King, 442 Sinex avenue, is in the army now and at the time, this was written was en route from Marysville to an undisclosed army base for assignment to unit. He left here February 6. George wrote his parents that he and a number of others who left the Peninsula at the same time had the “G.I. haircut and looked like “well just like the picture of himself he sent home. “But anyway,” said George, “my suit fits good, and the shoes are swell, and I’m having a lot of fun.” And his mother was given instruction “not to worry” as the young man was taking everything as a big adventure. George just celebrated his 18th birthday last September. He was a popular member of the junior class and when word got out that he was leaving, some 65 of his schoolmates gave him a farewell dancing part at the Scout hall and presented him with a remembrance gift, on January 28. On the big sheet cake had been inscribed “Farewell,” but the evening was spent in merriment to make it an occasion that George will remember with pleasure. His parents and Mr. & Mrs. Fred Horrigan, close friends, were also present as guests. On the fifth, the night before George left, he entertained several of his most intimate chums at his home, which will be another occasion for pleasant remembrance. The King family have resided in the Grove for the past six years. George has a younger brother, Arthur, attending high school. In his sophomore year George was one of the outstanding members of the football team. He and Donald Dean are the last recruits for Uncle Sam from the high school. They left here together.
