Pacific Grove Tribune Fri., May 18, 1945
S/Sgt. Robert Bray is Safe, Coming Home Family Hears
Through the Red Cross, Mrs. Pearl Bray, mother of S/Sgt. Robert Bray, heard Monday night that her son, held prisoner by the Nazis since April 8, 1944, has been released and would wire her as soon as he reached a port. Mrs. Bray, who had not heard from her son since a card mailed from Stalag 17b last July reached her this fall, had been informed that her son was alive and well by a fellow prisoner who was returned on the Gripsolm. The reason for his not writing was supplied by a Red Cross publication which reported that a shortage of form postcards from Sgt. Bray’s camp had curtailed correspondence. Sgt. Bray, who attended both Pacific Grove schools, had been overseas since July of 1943. Gunner on a flying fortress, he was shot down over Brusnwick during a raid. He was not wounded, so far as his family knows, at the time of his capture. Sgt. Bray did not meet any other Pacific Grove men in Germany during the period of his internment. At Stalag 17b, he was employed in the shoe repair shop.
