Married at Carmel Mission
At a Nuptial Mass in Carmel Mission Basilica, Margaret Helen Carpenter became the bride of Garrett M. Furlong-Adams. The 11 a.m. Mass was offered by the Rev. James Stapleton of Santa Catalina School. The bride is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Carpenter of Carmel. Gary’s parents are Mr. & Mrs. R.B. Adams of Carmel,a and his paternal grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. J.J. Adams of Pebble Beach. Given in marriage by her father, Peggy wore a princess style gown of white peau de soie with scalloped neckline and bodice of re-embroidered French lace. Her fingertip veil was held by a crown of seed pearls and she carried a cascade bouquet of butterfly orchids and stephanotis. Maid of honor was Maryann Odell of San Francisco, and bridesmaids were Rosemary Phillips and Virgie Trulitt of Carmel. They wore identical gowns of blue silk organza with matching taffeta bandeaux and carried white carnations and blue cornflowers. Gary’s best man was Peter Carpenter, the bride’s brother. Ushers were Edison Holt Jr. and James Angier of Carmel, and Marshall Matlock of San Francisco. Mrs. Carpenter attended her daughter’s wedding in a dress of cornflower blue silk brocade with matching hat and accessories, and wore a corsage of pink roses. Mrs. Adams chose a navy blue tie silk print with royal blue hat. Her flwoers were white roses. A wedding breakfast for members of the wedding party and the families of the bride and groom was held immediately after the ceremony in the patio of the Cypress West Hotel, followed by a reception. Southern California and Las Vegas were they honeymoon destinations chosen by Peggy and Gary. For traveling the bride wore a brown Italian knit suit with alligator shoes and bag and rust-colored accents. The wedding was the occasion for a reunion of Mr. Carpenter and his sister, Mrs. Helen O’Leary, who came from New York for her niece’s wedding and who had not seen her brother for 30 years. Another aunt from New York was on hand, Mrs. Carl MacKenzie. Other out-of-town guests included Gary’s great-grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Megenity of Fresno; his maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. L.E. Nathanson of Palo Alto; his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Jack Starrett (Valerie Furlong) of Hollywood; Mr. & Mrs. R.E. Sweet of Sacramento; Mr. & Mrs. Harold Thomas and Mrs. Ann McMillin of Fresno; and Mr. & Mrs. Franklin Van Meter of Richmond. Here from Walnut Creek were former Carmel residents and longtime friends of the bride and her family, Mr. & Mrs. John Harrington, with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Russell. Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Walsh and Mr. & Mrs. Frank Walsh, all of San Francisco, were also guests.
