New Year’s Day Bride
Miss Genevieve N. Newell is Bride of Salvadore Josephe Artese at New Year Rite

Eleven o’clock on New Year’s Day was the time for the wedding of Miss Genevieve Neisene Newell of Carmel and Salvadore Joseph Artese of Martinez. The ceremony took place in St. John’s at Del Monte, with the Reverend Theodore Bell officiating. The chapel was decorated with its Christmas greens to which had been added stately poinsettias and tall candles and forty guests from out-of-town and around the Peninsula were present. The processional and recessional marches were played by Mrs. Andrew Beaumont of Pacific Grove who was at the organ. The bride was married in a smart gray ensemble with which she wore a spring turban and carried a French bouquet of small flowers in gay colors. Miss Nadine Fox of Carmel, the bride’s only attendant, wore a tan wool ensemble with black fur trim and a corsage of gardenias. Miss Fox’ fiancé, Leland Drew Adams Jr., of San Francisco, was best man for Mr. Artese. Mrs. Byron Newell wore a spring print with black wrap and turban and a gardenia corsage, and Mrs. Joseph Artese, mother of the bridegroom, who with Mr. Artese came from Denver, Colorado, for the event, wore black velvet with a seal wrap and gardenia corsage. The bride is the daughter of Byron G. Newell and the late Mrs. Nell Newell. During her sixteen years in Carmel she had attended Sunset School and Monterey Union High School, after which she graduated from the University of California and did special work in Social Science at Chapman College in Los Angeles. The bridegroom is a chemical engineer who received his training at the Colorado School of Mines and Columbia University and is at the present time with the Shell Oil Company at Martinez, California. Following the ceremony the guests drove to Highlands Inn for the wedding luncheon at which the bride cut her cake. The table was charming with holly and tall candles. Following a honeymoon Mr. & Mrs. Artese will make their new home in Martinez. Guests from out of town were Mrs. Jean Jansen of Los Angeles; Chaplain and Mrs. Charles Miller, U.S.N., of Coronado, cousins of the young Mrs. Artese; Mrs. Viscella Ott of Los Angeles, an aunt of the bride; Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Douglas of San Luis Obispo, cousins; Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Artese of Denver, who were houseguests of Mr. & Mrs. Newell in Carmel until Sunday when they returned to their home in Colorado.
