Peninsula Daily Herald, CA April 27, 1925
Engagement of Local Girl Announced
Miss Joy Anthony was hostess at a luncheon on Saturday, April 25, which was given in honor of Mrs. Marion Swayne Richter, who unfortunately, was unable to be pastel shades cading in tiny clay acute appendicitis, and Miss Helen Holms of Oakland, house guest for the weekend. The center piece was a miniature May pole with ribbons of pastel shades ending in tiny May baskets filled with French bouquets. By each basket stood a tiny old fashioned lady in very charming costumes in pastel shades. When the guest pulled the streamers, from the baskets to start the May pole dance they found an engagement ring tied each streamer, while at the same time betrothal cards fluttered from the center of the May pole, announcing the engagement of the hostess to Mr. William E. Whedon of Los Angeles. Mr. Whedon is the son of Mr. & Mrs. E.A. Whedon of Los Angeles, and is an engineer at Langley Field, Hampton, Virginia. The guests were Mesdames, Oliver Watson, Fred Cope, Lawrence Lyons, Everette Smythe and the Misses Helen Holmes, Eva Riecks, Frances Pryor and Elizabeth Hollis. After luncheon the guests enjoyed hearing Miss Helen Holmes sing a few numbers. Miss Holmes has many friends on the Peninsula as she has sung at the various expositions held here. In the evening Mrs. Anthony invited a number of close friends of the family to a house-warming and to hear Miss Holmes, who is studying for grand opera in Oakland, sing a few of her favorite selections.
