Operation Fatal to Local 11th Cavalry Band Member
Funeral services were being planned here today for Pfc. Joseph Martin, well known Monterey youth and 11th Cavalry trooper, who died early yesterday morning, in southern California from Complications which followed what was expected to be a minor operation. As a lad, Pvt. Martin gained wide recognition throughout the state as drum major for both the Salinas and Monterey Sons of Legion drum corps, having led both groups in many competitions and parades. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Joseph Martin of Marina. Following his earlier work with the Sons of Legion, Pvt. Martin enlisted in the 11rh Cavalry about two and a half years ago and was assigned to the band as drum major. Although he was only a junior at Monterey high school, Pvt. Martin joined the army when 17 years old and for a time continued his studies at the local night school. Full Military Honors. He left Monterey with his outfit a year ago last November. Although he was born in Alberta, Canada, Pvt. Martin had lived in Monterey county for most of his life. Although plans are not yet completed, arrangements now are being made to accord Pvt. Martin full military honors at a funeral Monday and at the burial which is expected to be in the Presidio of Monterey Cemetery. The body is coming from southern California with Chief Warrant Officer D.C. Baxter, Pvt. Martin’s commanding officer, as official escort. Sons of the Legion also are making plans to participate in the last rites for their former drum major. Besides his parents, Pvt. Martin leaves a sister, Miss Doreen Martin, and a brother, Cal Martin, both of Marina. Local arrangements are being made by the Dorney Funeral home.
