Jeanette Roller and Joseph J. Gaston Announce Engagement at a Sunday Tea
Bright nosegays, which a flower girl took from her large tray to present to the guests, confirmed the suspicious friends that when they accepted Miss Jeannette Roller’s invitation to call between the hours of four and six o’clock Sunday afternoon in her Pebble Beach house. In the curled stems of the nosegays were slips of paper that read “Betrothed – Jeanette and Joe.” Joe is Joseph J. Gaston, the popular civilian manager of the Fort Ord Offices Club. He and lovely blonde Jeannette are planning a June wedding in the historic Carmel Mission. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis C. Roller of Pebble Beach and the sister of Mrs. Romie Garneau of Carmel. She was graduated from Visitation Convent in St. Paul, Minnesota, and attended the University of Minnesota for two years. While there she became a member of Chi Omega sorority. Later Jeanette studied voice at the Horner Conservatory of Music and the Cranston School of Music in Kansas City. The son of Mr. & Mrs. William K. Kaston of Kansas City, Missouri, Joe was graduated from the University of Iowa, where he was a member of Phi Chi, medical fraternity, and of the University Players. A talented actor and a clever mimic, he has appeared in many local entertainments since coming to the Monterey Peninsula Country Club for one winter season. His only sister, Miss Martha Gaston, is the commercial manager for Station KFOX in Los Angeles. Red camellias, in a heart-shaped arrangement, and silver candelabra holding ivory tapers, were to the center of the tea table at Sunday’s announcement party Presiding at the silver tea and coffee urns were Mrs. F.L. Knudsen and Mrs. George K. Gann. Miss Kay Knudsen and Miss Kay Bate assisted Jeanette and her mother in receiving the guests and in serving. Unexpected but amusing entertainment came when Mr. Gann rode up to the Roller home on one of his horses. With him was “Cowboy Jim: and his guitar, and Jim proceeded to delight the guests with his singing of cowboy songs. Those whom Miss Roller and her mother invited to the tea were Mrs. Monte Roth, Mrs. Mary Hodges, Mrs. Albert Brown, Mrs. Winton F. Swengel, Mrs. Grant Stephenson, Mrs. Jessie Caffee, Mrs. Catherine Bate, Mrs. F.L. Knudsen, Mrs. George K. Gann, Mrs. Gregory Teaby, Mrs. Richard Phinney (betty Boucher), Mrs. Robert Blake, Mrs. Carl Cope, Mrs. William O’Donnell, Mrs. Romie Garneau, Mrs. Clarke Tiedemann, Mrs. Howell Miller, Mrs. Thor Hellum, Mrs. C.C. Stewart and Misses Betty Uzzell, Gwen Carmbell, Rosalie Kimball, Kay Knudsen, Nancy Tiedemann, Kay Bate, Mary Poulos, Dorothy Krolfifer, Barbara Gresham, Helen Gresham, Dorothy McDonald, Eleanor Meehan and Mary Ann Harrington.
