Margaret Ann Giles, Dick Kiger to Wed in May; Their Betrothal Told at Party
Popular Margaret Ann “Sis” Giles and Blane K. “Dick” Kiger of Monterey are to be married in May. Their engagement was revealed in an original manner last Saturday evening at an announcement party in the home of the bride – elect’s parents, County Treasurer and Mrs. Russell W. Giles, at Maple Park, Salinas. The future bridegroom has a position in the Monterey postoffice, so miniature silver rural mail boxes with tiny heart-shaped red flags formed the place cards at the table where “Sis” seated her guests for refreshments following an evening of games. Attached to each mail box was a small envelope, addressed to the guest with a stamp cancellation giving the date and hour of the announcement party. These were linked by red ribbon streamers to corsages of red carnations and white stock, which surrounded a larger silver mail box in the table’s center. White stock and red tapers were also arranged around the centerpiece. Miss Giles’ guests found the romantic news contained in their envelopes, and in the envelope at the hostess’ place was her sparkling engagement ring. Present at the announcement party were the bride-elect and her mother, and Mrs. Stanley Douglas and her son, John Franklin Douglas of Monterey; Miss Helen Agard of San Francisco, formerly of Pacific Grove, Misses Pauline Sweeney, Wynette Walker, Eileen and Shirley Kiger, Eloise Johnson and Rosemary Baker of Monterey; Miss Joyce Emery of Surbiton, England, who is in Salinas “for the duration,” and Misses Betty McCoy, Betty Bingaman and Evelyn Nelson of Salinas. Although the date has not been definitely set for the wedding, Margaret Ann and Dick are making tentative plans for a May 16th ceremony in the Mayflower Congregational church of Pacific Grove. A graduate of the Pacific Grove High School, the bride-to-be is now studying at Salinas junior college. She is a member of the Monterey peninsula assembly, Order of Rainbow for Girls, and brought honor to that group when she was selected for the high position of grand worthy associate advisor, state of California, Order of Rainbow for Girls. Margaret Ann is the sister of William Russell Giles (who has just enlisted in the United States army), of Charles (Bud) Giles, Salinas junior college football player, and of Paul Giles. Her grandmothers are Mrs. Mary Potter of San Francisco and Mrs. Merina S. Varien of Monterey, and she is a niece of Mrs. Stanley Douglas of Monterey. Mrs. J.L. McCoy of Salinas, Mrs. Harold Chivers of Los Gatos, Mrs. Ed. Augustine of El Cerrito, and of Paul, William and Charles Varien, all of Monterey, and Franklin Varien of Los Gatos. The son of Mrs. E.C. Kiger of Monterey, Dick is the brother of Wayne Kiger, who recently joined the United States army air corps and is now in training at Bakersfield. His other brother, Bill, and his two sisters, Eileen and Shirley, make their home in Monterey with their mother. Following his graduation from the Monterey Union High School, he attended Salinas junior college and now has a civil service post in the Monterey postoffice.
