Betrothal of Carmel Girl is Announced
Mr. & Mrs. S.W. Dickinson of Memphis, Tennessee, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Virginia Laurel Harris of Carmel, to Mr. Peter Stuart Burk of London, England. After the wedding which will take place late in the spring, and a honeymoon in the southern part of the state the young couple will make their home in Carmel. After traveling extensively thru the United States and Europe, Miss Harris came to Carmel for a brief vacation before sailing to the Orient. Her travels were interrupted, however, when she became interested in remaining on the peninsula to manage the Palace Drug store in Carmel. Graduating from St. Mary’s Episcopal School for Girls in Memphis, Miss Harris studied pharmacy at the University of Tennessee, taking her academic work later at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she was a member of the Kappa Gamma sorority. Mr. Burk, an author of short stories, also came to Carmel recently after extensive travel through various parts of the world. A native of England, Mr. Burk served with the British Cavalry in Palestine for four years. His interest in the growth of rubber took him to the Malay states where he was manager of a rubber plantation. His work and travel interests took him to places such as the South Sea Islands, China, Japan, Egypt and Java. Since coming to the peninsula, both Miss Harris and Mr. Burk have acquired a host of friends who are wishing them much happiness in the future.
