Tiny Johnston and Lt. H.D. Newman Wed at Base Chapel in Memphis
A petite bride of November 10 was Eleanor “Tiny” Johnston, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Markham Johnston of Carmel; who met Lieut. Henry D. Newman, ATC, before the altar of the base chapel in Memphis, Tennessee. Lighting the chapel were white tapers, and chrysanthemum arrangements carried out the same color scheme. The service was read by the Chaplain of the Fourth Ferry Command. When Markham Johnston walked down the aisle with his daughter, “Tiny” was wearing an Isenberg Original of grapefruit gabardine, a matching hat with cocoa brown feathers and cocoa brown veiling swirled into a bow at the back and hanging as a short bridal veil. Her corsage was of white orchids and brown accessories contrasted with her attire, topped with a brown beaver coat for travel. Mrs. Amy Sloss of Memphis was matron of honor and standing with the benedict was Lieut. Fred Land, his roommate. Playing the wedding march and background music during the ceremony was Johnny Elizalade, who drove to Tennessee with the bride’s brother, Warren Johnston for the wedding. About twenty-five guests attended the four o’clock rites, after which a reception was held at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. In the candle lighted room, decorated with white chrysanthemums, family members and friends toasted the pair’s happiness with champagne and Johnny Elizalde again furnished music. Mrs. Johnston was dressed in a Patullo apple green wool dress, an American Beauty satin and tulle hat, and brown accessories. As the newlyweds had but a few days for a honeymoon, they remained in Memphis for the weekend before moving to their apartment on South Parkway East, where they’ll live until the benedict is transferred. Several parties were given for the benedict, the bride and her family at the Peabody Hotel and the Officers’ Club before the wedding. Mr. & Mrs. Johnston drove up to Chicago after the rites and are now spending a few days in New York with the Alva Johnstons. They expect to be back in Carmel around the end of this week, while Warren and Johnny planned to arrive during the first part of the week. The bride’s brother, Captain Markham Johnston Jr., and Mrs. Johnston are now in Carmel. Mrs. F.C. Price Sr., of Carmel is Tiny’s grandmother and she is also the granddaughter of Mrs. Luella B. Johnston of Hillsborough. Parents of the benedict are Mr. & Mrs. Louis T. Newman of Newman and San Francisco. Since his release from a German prison camp the officer has been attached to the Air Transport Command.
