Philip Wilsons Celebrate 49th Anniversary
Friday, April 21st, marked the 49th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Philip Wilson of Carmel. The occasion was celebrated with an informal but beautifully appointed tea on Friday afternoon at their home on Lincoln street, when members of the family and old friends called and offered congratulations. A family gathering on the following Sunday afternoon continued festivities, and Mr. & Mrs. James Wilson and their daughter, Mary Jo, arrived from Burlingame. With them were Mrs. Wilson’s son, Lester Hamilton and her sister Miss Mabel Blum of Kansas City. The Wilsons’ residence in Carmel dates back to 1904 when Sunset school was a little red school house and they lived opposite it on San Carlos street. In 1912 they bought the John Flemming Wilson place on The Point – a low redwood building as irregular in plan and as native as a piece of driftwood. Its ample living room and broad hearth came to mean good times to the young people growing up beside their own daughter Grace and her two brothers, Phil and Jim. Mr. Wilson, true son of Scotland, had a dream of organizing sports on the peninsula dn started with a tennis court on his own property, also a small club room under separate roof with a corner fireplace where for years it was the thing to have impromptu suppers after tennis and Sunday afternoon baseball. In fact much that is pleasant to remember about early village days centers around the Wilson place on The Point, when meadow stretched from the house to the sea, and the slope to the river knew no house, or plant other than sage. Guests at Friday’s affair were Mrs. Willis White, Mrs. H.W. Morse, Mrs. Jane Ordway, Mrs. John W. Dickinson, Mrs. Guy Jordan, Mrs. George Reamer, Mr. & Mrs. James Thoburn, Mrs. Louisa Dummage, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Norton, Phili Wilson Jr., James Jr., and Allen Thoburn and Mrs. Grace Miller.
