Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA Dec, 14, 1945
Sgt. Donald P. and Cpl. Alan Stewart
Sons of Mr. & Mrs. Chandler Stewart of Pacific Grove, have recently returned to the Peninsula after long tours of duty. Sgt. Donald spent 15 months at an isolated weather outpost in Greenland, one of a group of 11 men at that remote east coast station who were completely out of personal contact with the outside world for more than 10 months. Icebound from October until August, these men saw no other human beings except a dozen or so Eskimos who visited the station during the summer. In addition to regular hourly weather reports, giant balloons were released three times daily to gather data of winds aloft. A snow depth in May of over 200 inches and frequent wind speeds in excess of 135 miles per hour combined to make this place seem a veritable weather factory. Cpl. Alan Stewart, shown in a photo taken at Montecatini, Italy, has recently been discharged the from Army after three years’ service with the 91st Division, 18 months of which were spent in Italy, where he was awarded three battle stars. He was first baritone player in the division band and played trombone in the dance orchestra. His present plans are to complete his studies at Salinas Junior College, later attending the College of the Pacific, and eventually to enter the ministry of the Methodist Church.
