Edward Berwick Celebrates 88th Birthday Sunday
Edward Berwick, “grand old man of the Monterey Peninsula, tomorrow celebrates his 88th birthday. It will be the 45th he has feted here since leaving London, his birthplace. White hair and beard are the only marks time has put upon the “grand old man.” His figure still is tall and straight and his step as firm as it was during the years he was active in molding the destiny of his adopted land. For its prosperity the peninsula owes Berwick much. It was he who pioneered the pear raising industry in the Carmel valley. From a few boxes the crop has grown to enormous proportions. A story to the Herald yesterday gave the 1939 crop as 142 carloads. Berwick is now known as one of the country’s outstanding advocates of world peace. Since 1983 he has worked continually to rid the world of what he terms, “this idiocy called “war”.” He has made many trips to speak at peace conferences and is in constant communication with other leaders of the peace movement. A love for nature has always been his and to him Pacific Grove is indebted for several fine parks. Electing a member of the council without asking for a single vote about twenty years ago he was made head of the finance committee and piloted the city out of debt and obtained for its title to one-third of Prospect park, claimed by the old Pacific Improvement company. Berwick designed and laid out with his own hands that portion of the waterfront now known as Berwick park, one of Pacific Groves beauty spots. For years he has spent several hours each week tending flowers and shrubbery in the park and still continues to do so. TO him much credit is due for the founding of the Parcel Post and Savings banks. Becoming president of the California Postal Progress league, which was organized to agitate for the package service and banks, in 1903 he continued the fight until they were finally secured in 1913. Many other projects the “grand old man” has aided or accomplished individually and “is still always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to a worthy cause. From all parts of the world congratulatory messages were pouring into the Berwick residence at 343 Ocean View avenue, Pacific Grove, today, bearing expressions of good will and esteem from men and women in all walks of life. That his career of humanitarian endeavor may be prolonged for many years was the theme of nearly all together with appreciation for what he has accomplished.
