Pacific Grove council bids farewell to Meg Manus
By Susan Goldbeck
In a tearful remembrance of civic leader Meg Manus, who died of heart-related complications on November 30, Mayor Sandy Koffman told those in attendance at the council meeting, said that Meg’s passing was “ the end of an era.” Manus, who was a long-time regular attendee of city council meetings in Pacific Grove, was honored by Councilmember Steve Honegger with a bouquet of flowers which was placed on her, Meg’s, special seat. Mayor Koffman spoke of the many contributiosn made by Manus over the years and highlighted Manuys’ key role in getting emergency telephones installed at the shoreline. “This was Meg’s special project,” said Koffman, “and she would be pleased to learn that three lives have been saved this year as a result of those phones.” Koffman also mentioned Meg’s founding of the Pacific Grove Fourth of July picnic. “Meg leaves behind her a City far richer because of her,” said Koffman.
Pacific Grove remembers Meg Manus
By Betty Nixon
Last Saturday, on a crisp sunny day, the last hometown turned out to remember a favorite citizen, an Icon in the community, a friend, Meg Manus, the “Woman in black,” who died November 30th. In what was described as a “celebration of her life” in Jewell Park, Meg’s friends took turns dipping into water and sprinkling it on the Monterey Cypress tree which was planted in her honor by civic officials. Her favorite song, Let There be Peace on Earth, was sung by Mayor Koffman, her husband Danny Koffman, Planning Commissioner Mark Travaile and Councilmember Robert Huitt. Mark Travaile and Bob Huitt played guitars. Afterwards, there was a reception in Chautauqua Hall, and what a celebration it was! The stage ws decorated with portraits of Meg, snapshots galore, poems written in her honor, and other mementos recalling her long life of involvement in the arts and civic affairs here in Pacific Grove. There were flowers everywhere, bouquets from home gardens to splendid displays from Pacific Grove Florist. There were white tablecloths with black napkins tied with gold ribbons. Chautauqua Hall never looked so splendid. Danny Koffman read many of Meg’s own writings which he affectionately referred to as Meg-a-bites. Many speakers spoke of her humor, her contributions to the City and her constant attendance at Council meetings, including from Brother John (archivist of the Monterey Diocese), to the Pacific Grove disposal folks. Then, everyone in the hall raised their glasses in a champagne toast to Meg. There was plenty of good fellowship, followed with abundant food provided by Meg’s friends at the Pacific Grove Residents’ Association, the Art Center and many good friends. A Memory of Meg fund has been established, designated for education. Contributions can be mailed to Meg’s Fund, c/o Danny Koffman, PB Box K, Pacific Grove, 93950.
