People We Like
Fred W. Workman – Away back there in 1904, when an automobile was a curiosity and a chauffeur a peculiar individual with a long linen duster and goggles, about the only people who could afford a car were people who visited Hotel Del Monte. And one of the first chauffeurs at the hotel was named Fred W. Workman. It was in those days that Fred fell in love with the Monterey Peninsula region and formed the ambition to make his home here. Now he is busy helping thousands of other visitors form the same decision. Workman is a native of Indiana, came west in 198. He says he settled first I Oregon, but soon corrected his mistake by moving to California in 1900. He has been in this state ever since. Fifteen years ago, Fred Workman opened the Seventeen Mile Drive Cottage Court, which has since grown into one of the most popular establishments in all this section of California. He now has 67 cottages and entertains an average of more than 8000 visitors a year, a considerably larger number of people than the entire population of our city. It’s the way Fred runs his court that makes us like him. The place is kept scrupulously clean, which is fine. In addition, however, Fred permits no rowdyism, no honky-tonk sort of development. He early realized what sort of a town this is and sought to cater to the sort of people who would like a town of this nature. It has paid. Fred is properly named, for he is a true workman, one who does his job thoroughly. He is a persistent fellow, which is demonstrated by his continual plugging for the “single tax” plan. It doesn’t matter a bit how many people disagree and how violently so. Fred just keeps plugging away at it. Fred Workman is happily married and has two sons, one of them in school here and the other a student at College of the Pacific. He has done much civic work as a member of the chamber of commerce. Exchange club and city council. It would be interesting to gather statistics on the biggest service of all, the number of people who have made their homes here because of the favorable impression they received when they first visited Pacific Grove and stayed at Fred Workman’s establishment.
