Miss Geneva Merritt Becomes Bride at Impressive Ceremony
A ring steeped in family tradition now adorns the finger of Mrs. Herbert Carrol Nelson, who until her marriage Sunday was Miss Geneva Blanche Merritt. The wedding ring was fashioned from two others, worn by her two grandmothers and dating back some 83 years. The couple, who are expected to return to Pacific Grove tomorrow, to take up residence at 508 Willow street, were married at a simple but impressive ceremony at high noon in historic Colton Hall by Judge Monty Hellam, a long time friend of the bride. Her attire was a smart dusty pink crepe ensemble with which she wore a corsage of gardenias and lilies of the valley. Mrs. Walter M. Lobenstein of Los Angeles attended her sister and John Hulphers of Long Beach was best man for Mr. Nelson. There was a wedding breakfast after the ceremony at the home of the bride’s brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. R.H. Merritt, on Fountain avenue. Later they left for a week’s stay in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Lauretta Merritt of Pacific Grove and the late Richard M. Merritt, who was a musician in Boston and Pasadena afor many years of which nine years he was cornet soloist at the Raymond Hotel in Pasadena. She comes from a long line of New England ancestry dating back to the Mayflower. Although she was born in Boston, the new Mrs. Nelson has lived in Pacific Grove much of her life, attended high school here, and has made a host of friends on the peninsula. For the past four years she has been assistant manager at Abinante Music company to which position she will return. Mr. Nelson is a native of Brooklyn, New York, and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Nelson. He is a member of the 11th Cavalry Band of the Presidio of Monterey and is a member of the Glee Club. He has a dramatic tenor voice of distinct quality which he is training under Edward C. Hopkins. Before coming to the peninsula he spent two years in the Hawaiian Islands. Present at the wedding were the bride’s mother, Mrs. Louretta Merritt; her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Lobenstein and son, John, of Los Angeles; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. R.H. Merritt and their four sons, Richard, John, Warren and Phil Merritt; Miss Joy Merritt of Los Angeles, a niece of the bride; Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Abinante, Warrant Officer and Mrs. David C. Baxter, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Wlaker, Mr. John Hulphers, Mr. John Berryman of Michigan, Mr. Joseph Woods, Mr. John Carlsen and Mr. Angelo Bracco.
