Pacific Grove Peninsular Review, CA April 1, 1927
The Passing of John Penney
Mr. John Penney, highly esteemed pioneer resident of Pacific Grove, who passed away at 8 o’clock Wednesday night while in a deep sleep, was born in Kidderminster, England. Had he lived until April 5th of this year he would have reached the age of 73 years, 51 of which were spent in the state of California, including the 7 years in which he was a resident of Pacific Grove. He was married in Hayward in 1880 to Cora M. Worthington. From as early as ? up until the time of his wife’s death in 1914, Mr. Penney was in the employ of the Monterey County Water Works, as registrar, working himself up to the position of manager of the company. Previous to his arrival in the Grove the deceased figured in pioneer railroading in the state, with his home in Yolo county. Mr. Penney is remembered by old timers as proprietor of one of the first bakeries in Pacific Grove. The shop was located on Grand Ave. He also owned a number of cottages in the Grove. Mr. Penney leaves to mourn his passing an only daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Healey of Petaluma, Sonoma county, who was in attendance at his bedside at the end, and a grandson, Myrton Daniel Healey, aged 3 years. He is also survived by a brother in England and several brothers and sisters in South Africa. Mr. Penney was affiliated with the United Artisans and was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Pacific Grove and was one of the leaders in the Sunday school, often seen trudging churchward with his bible under his arm on early Sunday mornings. Funeral services are being held this afternoon in Paul’s Mortuary with the Reverend McArthur officiating. The body will be taken to San Lorenzo Cemetery where interment will take place in the family plot.

Penney, John, married C.M., age 72, died in Monterey County on March 30, 1927
