McCormick’s Death is Felt Keenly Here
A heart attack ended the life of Cyrus H. McCormick, Pacific Grove’s most famous bridegroom June 2, at his home at Lake Forest, Illinois. McCormick’s death was felt keenly here, particularly by members of the St. Mary’s by the Sea Episcopal church, for it was here that he was married to Miss Harriet Bradley Hammond, March 5, 1880. McCormick and his wife were frequent visitors to Pacific Grove and in 1898 they left a fund of the altar which provided for the repainting of the church, installation of a basement furnace, La Farge opalescent glass for the church windows, excavation of the church basement, grading of Twelfth street along the church property. New prayer books and hymnals for all pews, ad electric lights for church, parish house and rectory. In 1915 the McCormick’s donated another sum of more than $1600 which was used for laying a concrete sidewalk and in general improving the church property In 1921, after the death of Mrs. McCormick, McCormick sent a picture of his wife which now hangs above the mantel in the guild room, along with funds for the repainting of the parish house church and rectory. A short time later he sent the Harriet McCormick memorial window and a reproduction of the white silk altar hanging used at the wedding. He also made a gift of the kneeling cushion used at the ceremony. McCormick’s last visit to Pacific Grove was in 1933, following which he wrote a warm letter to the pastor and included $500 to go toward the Golden Jubilee celebration of the church to be held next year, provided the church is able to raise another $1500.
