Lt. Col. Warren Arthur Shoemaker, retired U.S. Army Reserve, died of a heart attack Feb. 2, in San Luis Obispo. He was 73. Born on Aug. 21, 1926, he grew up in Pacific Grove. He attended Robert Dwn Grammar School and graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1944, the same year he was inducted into the Army. His extensive military career included serving with the Third Infantry Division during the invasion of Germany and as a second lieutenant in the Korean War. He also served in Japan, Turkey, Brazil and the Pentagon. He was especially proud of his airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he earned his parachute badge. He won many ribbons and awards including the Bronze Star with Combat V Device and Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, a Distinguished Unit Citation, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Commendation Medal and the Parachutist Badge. On retirement from the Army, he was employed with Flying Tiger Airlines at the San Francisco Airport as manager of mail services and later as customer service manager. He retired in December 1986. He enjoyed attending yearly Pacific Grove High School alumni reunions and was an avid golfer and football fan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vilma Hillman Shoemaker, a brother, Richard Shoemaker; and a sister, Dorothy Shoemaker. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra Lynn Waldi of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a son, John Arthur Shoemaker of Auburn, Washington; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His ashes were scattered in the ocean at Pebble Beach
