Monterey County Herald, CA April 1, 2000
Vivian Maxwell Tompkins, a conservationist and women’s rights activist, died Friday at her home. She was 80. Born Feb. 22, 1920, in Pineville, La., she had lived in Seaside since 1989. Ms. Tompkins was a graduate of Raceland High School in Raceland, La. She received her associate of arts degree from Santa Barbara City College. Her hobbies included playing Scrabble, gardening and birdwatching. She is survived by three daughters, Antoinette Larson of Seaside, Jo Carol Brogoitti of Castroville and Mary Niesen of Hilo, Hawaii; three sisters, Vera Riviere of Thibodaux, La., Lucille Harper of Alexandria, La., and Pauline Spivey of Monroe, La.; one brother, Joe Maxwell of Pollock, La.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of the California Cremation Society. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Arthritis Foundation, San Francisco.
