Fifth slaying in Salinas
Gunshots from parked car kill man

By Thom Akeman / Herald Staff writer
Gunshots from a parked car killed a Salinas man Saturday afternoon as he was driving through an intersection in East Salinas. It was the fifth slaying in the city in less than three weeks. The man, whose name was withheld until his family could be notified, was taken to Natividad Medical Center so his organs could be harvested and used by others. He sustained a massive head wound in the shooting, witnesses said. A passenger in the victim’s vintage Chevrolet convertible was covered with the driver’s blood but apparently uninjured in the violence, police said. His name wasn’t immediately released either. Police said it was too soon to know if the shooting was gang-related, but investigators were combing the area of the shooting and talking to witnesses. The violence erupted at the intersection of Rider and Garner avenues as the victim turned north onto Rider from the west-bound lane of Garner about 2 p.m., Lt. Robin Stuart said. The shots were reportedly fired from a car that was apparently parked near the intersection. Stuart said. The suspect vehicle was described as a 1960s Ford Mustang painted primer gray. But police said later that the shoote – a male described as 18 to 20 years old, wearing a white T-shirt and a baseball cap – ran away from the area with a group of people. After the driver of the Chevy was shot in the head, his car ran off the pavement and crashed into a tree. The slaying occurred in a busy residential area and a crowd, including many children, gathered almost immediately. It was the fifth fatal shooting in a violence spree that started in Salinas on March 13, when two day-light shootings were attributed to gang violence. But not all the incidents were thought to be gang-related. There was, for example, a series of robberies by a 17-year-old who shot, pistol-whipped or beat most of his victims. And there was a slaying in apparent retaliation for a previous murder that had ended a love triangle. The first homicide occurred on March 14 when Erik David Inzunza, a popular football player at Alisal High School, was ambushed and shot to death as he walked his dog. A young suspect has been charged with murder and is awaiting trial in that slaying. On March 19, Reginald O. Jackson, 26, of Prunedale, who shot to death while sitting in his car with a woman near downtown Salinas. No one has been arrested. Last Sunday, Alonso Navarro, 20, was shot to death as he sat in his car in front of his North Salinas house. No one has been arrested in that slaying. On Thursday, Jose Lopez Diaz, 44, was shot to death in the living room of his Cross Avenue home, apparently in retaliation for a double murder committed by his son, Jose Orozco Diaz, 26. The younger Diaz is currently in Monterey County Jail, awaiting sentencing for his conviction of killing his estranged wife and her lover. No one has been arrested in his father’s slaying. The violence has prompted elementary school children to march to City Hall asking for protection, while high school students have peraded in East Salinas to call for peace. The Salinas City Council has scheduled a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Sherwood Hall to hear public testimony on the violence. Police have asked anyone with information about Saturday’s slaying to call Salinas detectives at 758-7284 or 758-7123.
