Carmel Valley - Lyman Carpenter Fowler, former dean of agriculture, trade and industries at Hartnell College’s East Campus, died Tuesday at his Carmel Valley home. He was 87. Born July 13, 1912, in Lincoln, Neb., he lived in Monterey County for more than 50 years. Mr. Fowler was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and did graduate work at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of California at Berkeley. He was a vocational education instructor in Nebraska, Half Moon Bay and Salinas, then went to Hartnell College as director of his East Campus and dean of agriculture, trade and industries, from 1947-72. He and his wife owned and operated Green Needles Choose and Cut Christmas Tree farm before moving to Carmel Valley Manor in 1986. A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Nebraska and California, he served as an elder for more than 50 years. A charter member of the Mariners Couple Club, he was skipper for two terms. He helped to organize and direct the Friendship Club for seniors at First Presbyterian Church in Salinas. Later, he was a member of Carmel Presbyterian Church. Mr. Fowler was a charter member and past president of the Y’s Men’s Club and the YMCA board, and a longtime member of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Posse, where he served as president and treasurer. He was a charter member of Salinas Northeast Rotary Club, a life member of the California Teacher’s Association, and a member of the National Education Association and the School Administrators Association. He was also a member and past master of the Buena Vista Grange. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Theaople; two sons, Kirk Fowler of Hollister and Dr. Kent Fowler of Salinas; a daughter, Connie Reeves of Salinas; a brother, David Fowler of Hailey, Idaho; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Private family memorial services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of S&LFHC. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to Carmel Valley Medical Center, Carmel Valley.
