Monterey County Herald, CA April 7, 2000
Big Sur - Fern Ione Fenton Trotter, a member of a pioneer Big Sur family and a former employee of the state Parks Department and the U.S. Forest Service, died March 31 at her home in Battleground, Wa. She was 80. Born Feb. 9, 1920, in Salinas, she lived in Big Sur for more than 50 years before moving to Washington 10 years ago. Mrs. Trotter’s grandparents, Margaret and Louis Fenton, owned a blacksmith shop at Confederate Corners on Highway 68 in Salinas, and her great-grandparents, Edward Fenton and Sally Marie Sargent, came to the Monterey area in 1868. Family members also established water works in Salinas and served as early county marshals. Mrs. Trotter worked for the parks service issuing permits and also for a time as a cook at Post Rancho Sierra Mar and Ventana restaurants. She loved to read, play piano and sing, participating in the Big Sur Review for many years and performing duets with her sister, Guelda. She was an avid golfer and became a big Tiger Woods fan in recent years. In addition to her sister, she is survived by her daughter, Sandra L. Coombs of Battleground, Kathy Brock of Carhas, Wa., and Judith Weidman of Orchards, Wa.; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis Smythe. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home in Vancouver. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Kaiser Hospice in Portland, Ore.
