Death Claims Loved Pacific Grove Woman
Illness Fatal to Mrs. Charles Bell; Services Wednesday

News of the death of Mrs. Emma Holladay Bell, one of Pacific Grove’s best known and best loved residents was being circulated among her scores of grief stricken friends today. Only last December, hundreds of Peninsula friends called at her home when she and Mr. Bell celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. This morning she died at a local sanitarium after a short illness. It was just at the turn of the century that Mr. & Mrs. Bell came to live among the pioneers of Pacific Grove and they became perhaps the best known couple of the growing community. “Everybody knows them and everybody likes them,” is what their scores of friends said of the Bells. Club Member. Although she was 76 years old, Mrs. Bell retained her active interest in Pacific Grove affairs almost until her fatal illness forced her to seek sanitarium treatment shortly after the celebration of her 50th wedding anniversary. She was a prominent and active member of the First Christian church, having been superintendent of the church’s cradle roll for mor than 30 years, a member of the Cypress Rebekah lodge, the Red, White and Blue club and of the Lucius Fairchild Women’s Relief Corps. She was active in the latter organization for more than 40 years. Besides her husband, Charles Bell, a former caretaker at the Pacific Grove high school, Mrs. Bell leaves a son, M.G. Lee of Pacific Grove; a daughter, Mrs. Bernard Schult of Carmel Valley, and a sister, Mrs. William Talley of Napa. Services Wednesday. She also leaves Evans Lee, a grandson of Pacific Grove; Mrs. Stanley McClurg, a granddaughter living in Carmel Valley, and another grandson, Lt. Bernard Schulte, U.S.A., who is on duty at Merced. There is one great-granddaughter, Sharon Lee McClurg. Mrs. Bell was a native of Atchison, Kansas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from The Paul Mortuary chapel with the Rev. Primus Bennett of the First Christian church officiating, assisted by members of the Women’s Relief Corps. Burial will be in the family plot at El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove.
