P.G. Man Drowned in Bay Mishap
Body of Capt. Beecher Found Floating Near Wrecked Skiff

Capt. H.S. Beecher, 57 year old retired army officer, lost his life in a boating accident off China Point, Pacific Grove, today. His body was sighted floated near wreckage of a small canvas and ply-wood skiff about 200 yards off the point at 12:30 this afternoon and investigation indicated he had been the victim of an accident. There was a severe bruise on one side of the unfortunate man’s face and the skiff had been battered, as if against rocks or a reef. It was believed the small craft had struck a submerged rock and that Captain Beecher was knocked unconscious. It was possible, however, that the boat had been dashed against the rocky point. An ardent angler, Capt. Beecher was in the habit of fishing in the bay off Pacific Grove. His automobile and boat trailer were found parked at the Hopkins Marine Station. Retired in 1933. Capt. Beecher retired from the army at the Presidio of Monterey on Dec. 1933, after two and a half years’ service as commander of headquarters troop. Retirement was because of physical disability. He had entered the army in 1902 as an enlisted man and was commissioned from the ranks. He won the Distinguished Service Cross, and the Order of the Purple Heart during the World War when he served overseas. Since 1933 Capt. Beecher had made his home at 220 Grove Acre avenue, Pacific Grove, and was widely known on the Peninsula. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Anna Beecher, a daughter, Katherine 14, both of Pacific Grove and a son, Fred Beecher of Watsonville. Body Sighted. Stanley Lawrence, an employee at the Marine Station, sighted the wrecked boat shortly after noon today. A moment later he saw Capt. Beecher’s body floating nearby. The body was recovered only after much difficulty as it drifted about near the point. Lawrence rescued it from a small launch. The body was taken to the Paul Mortuary pending an inquiry by Cororner J.A. Cornett. Charles Gilmer, Pacific Grove fireman, after inspecting the wrecked boat and viewing Beecher’s body said he thought the craft had probably struck a submerged rock off China Point. There is a dangerous reef there, according to Gilmer, who is familiar with the Pacific Grove waterfront. Mrs. Beecher told Police Officer George Page, who informed her of the tragedy that her husband, went fishing early this morning. She added that he had suffered a slight stroke two weeks ago but it was not known whether this illness contributed to today’s fatal accident. Buried in El Carmelo Cemetery
