Two Peninsula Residents Die in Crash
Carmel Woman, Monterey Garageman Crushed Beneath Car
Widow of Accident Victim Crawls from Under Auto unhurt

Two peninsula residents were killed early yesterday when the roadster in which they were riding turned over near Watsonville. Harry Bennett, 81, Monterey garageman, and Mrs. Alva Kehler, 42, Carmel widow, were crushed to death when the roadster’s light top collapsed. Mrs. Bennett was able to crawl from under the wreckage and escaped without a scratch. She summoned help but both her husband and Mrs. Kehler were dead when taken from beneath the car. Wet pavement is believed to have caused the crash which occurred at Werner’s Hill, two miles south of Watsonville. The roadster skidded on the turn at the foot of the grade, careened off the highway and turned over. Bennett Well Known. Bennett is well known here, having engaged in the garage business in Monterey for a number of years, with a nephew, Frank Bennett, he operated a garage on Tyler street. Bennett was an officer in the local Eagles lodge. Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters, Cleome and Thyra Bennett of Napa; his father, N.N. Bennett of Roseville, Oregon; three sisters, Mrs. Lula Moody of Roseville, Mrs. Eva Robertson of Berkeley and Mrs. Maude Bennett of Richmond, and two brothers, Carl Bennett of Martinez and Homer Bennett of San Francisco. Mrs. Kehler, who lived in Carmel with her daughter, Catherine, came to the peninsula about a year ago. Her daughter is her only surviving relative. Funeral services for both Bennett and Mrs. Kehler are in charge of the T.A. Dorney funeral parlor and will be announced tomorrow.
