Grove Man Electrocuted
4,000 Volt Shock Fatal to Lineman
Walter Bean, Employed by PG&E, Instantly Killed Today
Companion Vainly Attempts to Save Man from Live Wire Contact

Walter Bean, 48 year old lineman for the Pacific Gas and Electric company, was the victim of a fatal accident this afternoon, while at work on a power line pole near the corner of Del Monte avenue and Figueroa street, not far from the company’s Monterey plant. Bean was preparing to run a ground wire up the pole when in some manner, his body came into contact with a wire carrying 4,000 volts. His companion, Leonard Gerringer, at work on the same pole, immediately tossed a loop of rope around Bean’s body and pulled it away from the wire, but Bean’s safety belt was not fastened and his body plunged to the street, 25 feet below. Dr. J.P. Sandholdt, who was summoned, said the man was undoubtedly killed by contact with the live wire and not by the fall. Bean who lived at 706 Cedar street, Pacific Grove, leaves a wife and two stepchildren. He had been employed by the Pacific Gass and Electric company for the past eight years. (buried in El Carmelo Cemetery)
