Monterey Daily Cypress, CA Dec 21, 1910
Funeral of M.R. Stansbury
Many Pay Respects to Good Citizen of Grove
The impressive funeral services on the late M.R. Stansbury were held from the Methodist church yesterday afternoon at 2:30. The church was filled with the friends of Mr. Stansbury, who had called to pay a last tribute to their friend and comrade, who they had been wont to meet for so many years in their daily walks of life, and who had never failed to greet them, with a smile and happy greeting. The members of Lucius Fairchild Post, of which Mr. Stansbury was an honored member, sand Lucius Fairchild W.R.C., acted as a special guard of honor, as the body passed to and from the church. The church was daintily decorated with a mass of calla lilies and smilax and other beautiful floral offerings. Rev. Leslie M. Burwell, pastor of the church, conducted the services, speaking in a beautiful way of the life and death of the deceased. The choir of the church, of which Mr. Stansbury’s children have been members for years, sang several beautiful Christmas carols that the choir had been practicing for Christmas and which were especially liked by Mr. Stansbury, were sung as a last request. The address of the pastor as well as the whole of the funeral ceremonies, was in the nature of a triumphal passing of a soul who had joyfully received the summons and was ready and happy when he heard the Lord say “Well don, my good and faithful servant.” The body was laid to rest in El Carmelo Cemetery, beside the remains of his wife, with whom he had spent so many happy years of his life. The ceremonies at the grave were conducted by Lucius Fairchild Post G.A.R., assisted by Mr. Burwell. The active pallbearers were James Harper, H.G. Jorgensen, E.B. De Forest, E.E. Long, E.C. Hurlbert and John Proctor.

Stansbury, Madison R., age 77, died in Monterey County on Dec. 18, 1910
