Driver Braked Car, Causing it to Skid and Overturn; Inquest this Evening
Mrs. Sarah A. Sherwood, one of the pioneer residents of Pacific Grove, was killed this morning in an auto accident at Selma, about three miles south of Fresno. Mrs. Sherwood had been visiting her daughter and family at Tipton, Tulare county and was returning home when the accident occurred. It was about 8 o’clock this morning when Mrs. Sherwood and her son-in-law, J.A. Wornock, a rancher of Tipton and his wife were traveling northward toward Fresno. They were on their way to Pacific Grove returning Mrs. Sherwood to her home. Wornock was driving the auto according to advices the Herald received from Selma this afternoon. He started to pass another northbound auto and then seeing an approaching auto stepped hard on the brakes in an effort to get behind the car he had been following. The pavement was slightly wet with early morning mists – the Wornock car skidded and before it could be straightened out on the road it crashed into the ditch and overturned. Mrs. Sherwood was instantly killed, advices said. Mrs. Wornock suffered serious injuries to the head and face and possible internal injuries. Wornock suffered slight bruises and cuts but was not so seriously injured. Passing autoists rushed Mrs. Sherwood and Mrs. Wornock to the hospital at Selma. An inquest was scheduled to be held at Selma this evening under the supervision of John Lisle, Fresno county coroner. The body of Mrs. Sherwood will be shipped to Pacific Grove following the inquest. If this is held tonight the remains will be sent north on the train leaving Selma at nine o’clock tonight. Mrs. Sherwood was 88 years, seven months and 16 days old and a native of Illinois Interment is planned to be held in Pacific Grove Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock.
