Mrs. Eliza Chappell Passed Away Yesterday
Mrs. Eliza Chappell passed away yesterday. She was born May 25th, 1837, in Devonshire, England. She was married to William Chappell in Michigan, in January, 1867. She had been a resident of San Mateo county for forty-two years, and she and her husband had visited Pacific Grove for thirty-four years. They had a cottage here for twenty-eight years at 215 Nineteenth street. They at first dwelt in a tent like many others when coming to Pacific Grove. The deceased became a Christian early in life and united with the Methodist Church, but owing to convenience for many years she and her husband belonged to the Presbyterian Church, he being an elder of the church. They had attended the Methodist Conference here for many years. They celebrated their golden wedding a year ago. Mrs. Chappell never fully recovered from the shock caused by the death of her son, who was buried here six years ago. The funeral services will take place from her late residence tomorrow.

Mrs. Chappell’s Funeral Held This Morning
The funeral of the late Mrs. Eliza Chappell of Menlo Park took place from her dearly beloved summer home, 215 Nineteenth street, Pacific Grove, at ten o’clock this morning. The Rev. James Falconer of Knox Presbyterian Church of Berkeley officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. J. Peters and the Rev. T.J. Barkle of Monterey. It was very fitting that the two latter clergymen should assist at the last sad rites of Mrs. Chappell, as they come from near her old home in Cornwall, England. It was a most impressive service and there were many flowers as loving tokens from the friends who had held Sister Chappell in loving esteem. A quartette of Cornwall friends consisting of Mesdames Hanson and peters and the Rev. Mr. Barkle and the Rev. Mr. Peters sang very tenderly the hymns she loved so well, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” and “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” Her husband, William Chappell, who had been her loving, devoted companion for over fifty years, is left to mourn her loss. They celebrated their golden wedding last year, and a strange coincidence was that she passed away on her eighty-first birthday anniversary.
