Death Claims A.B. Coats, Well-Known Designer and Builder
The death of Albert B. Coats, designer and contractor who built a large number of the buildings on Cannery Row as well as numbers of other well-known commercial and residential Buildings on the Monterey Peninsula, occurred suddenly last night in San Jose. Mr. Coats, with his wife and a daughter, Mrs. W.W. Stevens, of Sacramento, were driving from San Francisco, where Mr. Coats had had an operation, to their home in Monterey when Mr. Coats was taken ill near San Jose. He was taken to a hospital where death occurred last night from a heart condition. Mr. Coats was extremely well known on the Monterey Peninsula, chiefly for his building activities, though he was a personal friend of many persons in business and political life. The family came to Monterey from Arizona and Oakland to make their home 31 years ago. The family resident is at 980 Jefferson street, Monterey. During his career as designer and building, Mr. Coats built approximately half the buildings on Cannery Row including the Oxnard, Sea Beach and Custom House canneries, also the Edgewater Packing Corp. and Sal Ferrante, Inc., buildings and several others. Mr. Coats also designed and built Holman’s Department Store, the Murray Building, the Monterey Furniture Co., the T.A. Dorney Mortuary and countless other commercial structures. He also built many residences, among them Sherman Rose house on Monterey Mesa and portions of the present Frank Work home, also on the Mesa, formerly the property of writer Gouverneur Morris. Mr. Coats was born in Cassville, N.Y. He was 68 years of age. His university training was received at Brown University and Massachussets Institute of Technology from which he graduated in 1905. He was a past chancellor of Monterey Lodge, No. 180, Knights of Pythias, and a charter member of the Monterey Peninsula Contractors Association. Because of Mr. Coats’ improvement after an operation in a San Francisco hospital, family members had planned a celebration to be held today at the Coats’ Jefferson street residence. In addition to his widow, Mary L. Coats, Mrs. Coats leaves six children, Mrs. Stevens of Sacramento, Orville Coats, Gordon Coats, Mrs. Adelaide Thomas, Mrs. Flora Matthews and Mrs. Margaret Ann Regan, all of Monterey. There are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Elwood T. Theobald, of Santa Cruz, is a sister. Funeral arrangements are I charge of the Dorney Mortuary with services to be announced later.
