Leroy Anthony “Dick” Wills, a cook for 29 years, died of Lou Gehrig’s disease Monday at his Seaside home. He was 46. Born Jan. 4, 1954, in New Orleans, he lived in Monterey County for 16 years. Mr. Wills served in the Army from 1971 to 1986, including a tour of duty at Fort Ord. After leaving the military, he moved to Seaside and worked as a cook for the Defense Language Institute, Operation Shoestring and Monterey Pines Convalescent Hospital. Before his illness, he worked in the janitorial department at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Seaside and a former member of a Masonic lodge in Germany. He was an avid bowler. Mr. Wills loved jazz and, during his illness attended the Blues in the Park concerts in Seaside. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Mitchell; two sons, Clyde Wills of Salinas and Anythony Wills of Sunnyvale; a daughter, Samantha Wills of Seaside; his mother, Mary Wills of New Orleans; five brothers, Willie Jones, Terry Wills, Lewis Wills and Stanley Wills, all of New Orleans
