Monterey County Herald, CA April 21, 2000
Monterey - Mary Brucia Darling, a longtime Monterey County resident, died Wednesday at the Hospice House of the Central Coast in Monterey. She was 87. Born July 1, 1912, in Martinez, to Antonio and Guiseppina Brucia, she had lived in Monterey County for more than 70 years. Mrs. Darling graduated from Monterey High School in 1930. After high school she worked as a secretary to Monterey City Clerk Clyde Dorsey for eight years. Her fluency in Italian and Spanish led her to interpreting in the courtrooms of Judges Ray Baugh and Monty Hellam at Colton Hall. In the 1930s she assisted her father in helping many Italian fishermen establish citizenship. When raising her family, Mrs. Darling worked as a bookkeeper for Del Mar French Laundry until her retirement in 1982. In 1938, she and her husband, James, built one of the first homes in what was then known as the Monte Regio area of Monterey. She was active in the Monterey Civic Club for many years, and was endowed with life membership. She enjoyed a small social group of friends who referred to themselves as the Knit-Nuts. She loved to share her knowledge of the history of Monterey with relatives and friends. She had a passion for writing poetry, and until her 80th birthday she entertained her family with her famous soft-shoe Tap dance. She is survived by two sons, James Darling of Santa Paula and Bruce Darling of Capitola; a daughter, Judy Darling Zappacosta of Santa Cruz; three sisters, Rose Pugh, Angela Duffy and Toni Brucia, all of Monterey; a brother, Joe Brucia of La Mesa; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, James, died in 1972. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Mission Mortuary Chapel in Monterey. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary chapel. Burial will follow in the Monterey Cemetery. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Monterey, or to the Hospice of the Central Coast, Monterey.
