LLOYD PACHECO TEVIS JR., 86, died Monday at his Santa Rosa home. Born in San Mateo, Mr. Tevis lived in Rancho Mirage from 1956 until he moved to Santa Rosa in 1988. He was a UC Riverside field biology researcher at the Philip L. Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center in Palm Desert. The pioneer bighorn sheep researcher also did work on drought-resistant native plants and desert amphibians. His published work included numerous scientific journal articles and "California Grizzly," which he co-authored with Tracey Storer. He started a mobile desert laboratory with Fitz Wendt through the California Institute of Technology before the Deep Canyon center opened. Mr. Tevis was involved in the Rancho Mirage cityhood campaign and subsequently served on the council from 1973 until 1982 and then served on the city's trails committee for another six years. He served on the boards of the Living Desert Reserve in Palm Desert and Palm Springs Desert Museum. Mr. Tevis campaigned to protect the desert from developers, especially hillside construction, and set aside desert habitat for preservation and for enjoyment by hikers and equestrians. He belonged to Desert Riders and the Mountain Protective League. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Tevis was a descendent of Romualdo Pacheco, the 12th governor of California, and of Lloyd Tevis, president of Wells Fargo Co. for 20 years until 1892. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nona; two daughters, Jane Wood of Healdsburg and Yvonne of San Francisco; a grandson, Alexander Wood of Healdsburg; and a brother, Richard of Carmel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Healdsburg, where Mr. Tevis was a member. Interment will be in El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Lafferty Smith Colonial Chapel in Santa Rosa is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions: UC Riverside Foundation designated for the Deep Canyon Desert Research Center or to the Point Reyes National Seashore Association in Point Reyes.
