San Luis Obispo Tribune on 3/27/2005.
Marjorie Elizabeth Easton Stokes, of San Miguel passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, following a yearlong illness. A chapel service is scheduled for 3 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home of Paso Robles. A graveside interment is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at El Carmello Cemetery of Pacific Grove. In her brief 83 years, Margie led a full and active life. Born in Monterey, she spent her first nine years on her family's Indian Valley ranch out of San Miguel. She was one of four children. Following her mother's death, Margie grew up with her Aunt Helen and Uncle Alton Emery and three cousins just outside Salinas on River Rd. Margie attended Hartnell Junior College of Salinas, where she met her future husband, Burton A. Stokes. She attended San Jose State Teacher's College, where she graduated with an elementary education teaching certificate. Following her marriage to Burt in 1941, Margie lived in many of these United States and overseas on Okinawa with her husband, who was in the Air Force, and their four children. Margie thoroughly enjoyed travel vacations throughout the entire U.S., visiting every state and most national parks and monuments. She was an outdoors person, who, on any given day, would rather be outside than in. She was an avid camper, hiker and rock hound, and she enjoyed fishing. She and her husband were four-wheeling in and around the Rocky Mountains in the early 1970's, before it was popular. After 18 years of teaching and following her and her husband's retirements, Margie and Burt moved back to the Indian Valley family ranch, where she started. That became her home again for the last 21 years. Margie was especially beloved by her family and friends for having a large open heart and being extremely compassionate and full of the joy of life. She had her own brand of energy and high spirit, which she maintained her whole life, even through this last year of her illness. She will be lovingly remembered and tremendously missed. Margie had four children, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Burton A. Stokes of San Miguel; children, Helen Spruill of Ellenwood, Ga.; Lusana Stokes of Bigfork, Mont., Elaina Stokes of San Miguel and Burton Stokes Jr. of Bodega; sisters, Phyllis Medlen of Mountain Grove, Mo., and Jean Wardwell of Santa Rosa; close-as-siblings cousins, Jack Emery, Jean Emery and Jayana Emery; grandchildren, Lane, Jimmy, Deliah, Hadrian, Simon, Sonya, Luther, Ryan, Dyana, Christine, Marie and Easton.
