Probation Asked by Driver of Car that Killed Girl
Salinas - J.S. Flaga, 45, of Oakland, pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary man- [data missing] Henry G. Jorgensen here Thursday morning and asked probation which, it was indicated, probably will be granted him. Fraga was held after his automobile struck down and killed Mary May Parsons, 8-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Parsons of the Buena Vista district Tuesday afternoon when the child darted across the river road, opposite Spreckels, from behind a truck which she had been watching her father repair. The reason Fraga was charged with manslaughter by Captain Earl Griffen was because his brakes were virtually useless and skidmarks indicated the car traveled more than 70 feet after it struck the child. Captain Griffen of the state highway patrol here emphasized the fact that brakes must be kept in repair and said a motorist who is so unfortunate as to kill a person or figure in a collision is subject to arrest if his brakes are shown to have been the cause. Fraga has an excellent reputation and was overcome with grief over the death of the child. He pleaded guilty and threw himself on the mercy of the court. District attorney Russell Scott recommended that probation be granted. The child had been watching her father work on a truck and just started on her way home when Fraga approached in his machine traveling about 35 miles an hour. He swerved but caught the child on the bumper and crashed into the fence. Funeral services for the child were held Thursday afternoon in the chapel of the Salinas funeral parlors. The Rev. A.W. Webster Sr. who is substituting in the pulpit of the United Presbyterian church here while his son is in the east, officiated. Milton Harnell played the pipe organ. Interment took place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Besides her parents, the little girl is survived by three sisters and a brother. They are: Anna, Helen, Irene and Grover Parsons. She was born in Salem, Oregon, November 29, 1923.
