Col. William A. Austin Taken by Death
Col. William A. Austin, 75, who had made his residence at Monterey Peninsula Country Club since his retirement in 1934, died this morning at Letterman Hospital, Presidio of San Francisco. He had been in ill health for several years, and confined to the hospital for the last two years. Col. Austin entered the Army during the Spanish American War and was commissioned 2nd Lt. of Cavalry on Feb. 2, 1901. He served continuously until his retirement as a colonel of Cavalry. Col. Austin leaves his wife, Mrs. Helen Atwood Austin of the Country Club, and two sons, John Atwood Austin, Pebble Beach, and Captain William A. Austin Jr., now on terminal leave at the family home here. There are also three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at the Army Chapel, Presidio of San Francisco, and burial will be at the National Cemetery there.
